In 2001, I embarked on my Somatic training, after not being able to straighten nor bend my knee after a sports accident. While I had successfully overcome my chronic pain, I was now dealing with an acute pain and inability, let alone a damaged meniscus. Hobbling at best to work, I remembered reading a book on Somatics, by Thomas Hanna, and recalled him talking about sensory-motor amnesia.

Yes, my leg could no longer remember how to straighten or bend. The pain was one thing, but the inability to function aroused my curiosity and so I packed up and drove my VW camper to California and shortly thereafter during my Somatic training, the leg began to remember and move with ease.

How could such simple movements cause me to release the hold and safely allow me to amble more comfortably? When one practice Somatic Exercises:

* Deep relaxation is sensed.

* The brain produces the chemicals necessary to cause pleasure and allow for movement to be restored.

* The release of protective mechanisms occur.

* The ability to focus more clearly and concentrate increases self awareness, in other words, the brain functions at a higher level.

It can’t be so. How do healthy vertebrate animals move about?
Healthy vertebrate animals already use the brain’s process to keep themselves nimble, agile, strong, and vital.

When you see your cat or dog stretching, the term is called a pandiculation. Your pet isn’t really stretching, it’s contracting itself primarily with its entire body. In the morning, you’ll witness how an animal arouses it’s brain to wake up its muscles and ready itself for the day.

Before the dog goes to the food bowl, or your cat answers an email, or your canary makes a cup of coffee, they all go through a process which reminds their muscles of their function and ability. And they do it everyday, and during the course of each day.

So if they can remain agile, strong, and ready for action, then we as vertebrate animals can use the very same process which has simply gone un-noticed as a cute thing your pet does.

You can elicit this very response voluntarily in order to decrease any stiffness you sense and the reward is the good feeling of having reset your muscles to a comfortable length.

Your awareness within yourself grows as you regain this lost art of being a mammal through this sensory act. Use it and you’ll be supple again.

When an animal is generally ill, the act of pandiculation is surprisingly absent. As it gets well, it returns to this healthy act.

I lived with a so called incurable disease, Fibromyalgia, in other words, I lived with chronic pain throughout my entire body. So I had to search out and find out what could get me out of my predicament.

In 1997, after living most of my adult life with a pain in the neck, back, down the legs, between the shoulders, etc. let alone the stiffness, sleep difficulty and host of other symptoms. It was movement which saved my life.

I tried a whole range of approaches with varying degrees of satisfaction but none which could effectively help me move the way I thought I could… that is with ease and effortlessness. Stiff, sore, achy, limited, awkward, stressful moves, yeah, that I was a master at.

It took about three months when I first experienced my feet on the floor. It was as if I had never felt them before. That led me to eventually chuck my previous career and instead learn how movement could help, that is until I had the day of the sports accident.

Eventually I went back to one of my teachers who I had trained with and he suggested that I needed some deeper neurological work, thus I rekindled Somatics and took the training as a Hanna Somatic Educator®.

Later on I gave a workshop with my former teacher in attendance… afterwards he realized that Somatics was even better than the training method he had devised to get people out of pain, the very one which initially set me on the path of healing through movement.

This all lead me now to this very un-exercise like system of Somatic Exercises. Instead of the usual approach of trying to go further, pushing harder, here was an approach which called for me to move lazily, and focus my movement in certain patterns to elicit the brain to manage how I moved.

I have to say at times it felt otherworldly since I had always tried to move, to push, to go harder, and here was this incredibly simple, easy way which led me to a path of effortlessness and grace that I had not experienced at all as an adult and frankly it was vague whether I really had it as a child…

The process of recovery wasn’t necessarily straightforward yet even in the down troughs I could realize there was something better than before. Yet the feelings of how natural all of this felt kept reappearing and manifesting.

The aches, pains, had gone… an ability to effectively deal with injury… yep I returned to playing and getting knocked down on the ground… this time it was ever more different and my senses improved as did my coordination levels and that youthful feeling no doubt re-enlivened me… all so very natural.

Yes, learning a new activity didn’t seem as daunting, in fact, I relish learning any new pattern of movement knowing how that stimulates the brain into further flexibility and higher function.

Yes, from a rigid brain to a plastic brain… the choice is evidently clear to me which I’d rather have. And now the ability to train my body as I age with ease and effortlessness, just as a wild animal pandiculates itself to move in all the ways it must…

Pandiculating enhances how well you can move.

Current research advises against stretching in the traditional manner that we were taught. Many fans of this viewpoint look at the kinetic chains of movement…

… this gives us the glimpse into the animal behavior of pandiculation. To run with the herd, jump like a deer, and have the speed of a cheetah, requires reprogramming that marvelous brain of yours so your chains of muscles can move with intelligence.

Mel C Siff, from Fact and Fallacies, says, “Programming your central nervous system is more important than strength training and aerobics. And at all stages of training must never be neglected”. So you see, the set up to movement is this arousal of the brain through this very cortical process of pandiculation, aka Somatic Exercises.
