My body was wracked with constant pain and stiffness in my 20’s and 30’s.

(There was a point in my life where I was told it was all in my head.  And that I had to “learn to live with it”).

So I bounced from practitioner to practitioner.  From the medical system of pills, P.T., stretching for hours, icing, heating, balms, tens unit, etc.

To alternative approaches such as Chiropractic, Massage (gobs of it), Acupuncture, Cranial Sacral, Rolfing, Brain Gym, Alexander Technique, Tai Chi, Meditation, Yoga, etc.

All in all I saw some 60+ practitioners and scores of approaches. 

All good people but…

Eventually, I got diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.  Which is chronic body wide pain that “sucked the life out of me”.

But I continued the endless bouncing loop until one day.  I found a solution.  I learned a nifty system of exercises that helped my compensations.

Not the standard cookie cutter approach.  But one which worked with what I could do.  And that would put me together to function a better level.

Life was good.  So I changed careers to help people overcome pain and stiffness.  Got back to playing sports. 

All good until one day, my knee got injured.  And remained locked up.

So what I had been doing and helping people with.  No longer worked for me.

Surgery was an option unless I could find a more ‘conservative approach’.  Or one that could help at the deeper neurological level.

See I couldn’t find anyone or anyway to unlock the lock.  I was in a bad jam trying to help people get out of pain.  But I was stuck too.

And surgery now seemed like the way to go. 

But I heard that a training was coming up.  So I got accepted into the 3 year Hanna Somatic Education training.

Hi, I’m Edward Barrera.  I’m a Hanna Somatic Educator.  That means I’ve been trained in neurophysiology

Specifically on how the brain can you give you back confident control so you can feel good for life.

So, I went there for my own relief.

And here’s what I learned.

It was all in my head.  Well, more specifically the brain.  Which had gone haywire since it kept producing pain and stiffness

And that it would have a hold on the lock too.

Today we know that it is the brain which causes pain or ongoing stiffness.

Even though we may feel it in the neck, back, hip, knee, leg, foot, etc.

Yet a specific part of the brain.   

The sensory-motor cortex is the key to lower and reset tension levels.

Thus freeing the lock so the brain can produce all the happy feelings we enjoy or used to enjoy.

See, our nervous system can shift to more calm and comfortable states.

So like a thermostat.  We can dial down stiffness, tension, and pain.

Back to our comfort zone without drugs, without hard exercise

We all know that exercise is good for us.  But for many people, it’s too hard or it ends up causing more pain or stiffness.

Our approach is the Complete Reverse since we address things at the level of the brain.  And specifically, where the brain can lower tension levels

You end up feeling more relaxed which leads to greater feelings of comfort.

Since the brain has the power to quickly reset tension levels. 

We feel freer.  Flexibility returns.  You can move with confidence.

Pain diminishes such that it is now under your cortical control.

Over time, the brain changes back to its former happier self.

See, the ACP (American College of Physicians) updated their guidelines.  To include what we do. 

They are saying “this is the first thing to do to relieve pain.

And this same process.  Is exactly how healthy vertebrate animals regulate tension out of their system. 

While at the same tuning up their muscles and movement system.  To move easy, with an unencumbered agility, balance and grace.

See, you have a somatic nervous system where there are feedback loops of movement.  Where you can sense tension, pain, or good feelings too.

Then there’s a secondary loop.  That deals with the level of effort and tension or how much or little force you can muster.

So you discover a physical skill set.  How to tap into the parts of the brain, the nervous system and feedback loops. 

To feel or sense a change for good!

Since the pills may not be the solution.
